“ By 2022, more than 75% of global organisations will be running containerised applications in production,
up from less than 30% today.” Gartner
Containers vs Virtual Machines
What is a container?
Containers are similar to virtual machines in respect to abstracting compute resources for your applications to run on, but they vary in terms of how they accomplish this. Virtual machines are more resource heavy because each virtual machine runs its own operating system, whereas containers share the same underlying host operating system. As a result, containers are lightweight, more portable, and secure.
What is Kubernetes?
One of the challenges with containers is how to manage them. Kubernetes is the de facto standard tool for this.
Kubernetes is an orchestration tool for containers. Kubernetes abstracts data centre operations and gives you a standard way to manage your workloads across the cloud or on-prem.
It greatly simplifies deployments and makes sure workloads are fully utilised – lowering costs, and increasing operational velocity.
Kubernetes provides the following functionality:
- Load balancing
- Horizontal scaling (scaling out) to accommodate fluctuating workload demands
- Secrets and configuration management
- Self-healing infrastructure
- Storage management
- And much more...
